More than 1,000 votes are in, and the People’s Choice Award is still wide open. Voting closes next Friday, 4 September.
The People’s Choice is the one award of the 27th Australian Timber Design Awards decided not by our judges but by you. Every entrant in this year’s program is on the ballot, from bespoke furniture to harbourside landmarks, and anyone with an email address can vote.
“We opened voting a week ago, and we have already passed a thousand votes,” said Kylan Low, who is organising this year’s program. “Some of the most popular entrants are getting hundreds of votes, so you can see a few out in front and then a long tail. But there is a week to go. It is still anyone’s race.”

For the teams who have entered, Low has a tip: promote your project on Instagram!
“If you have entered a project and you really want to win, there is definitely scope for a good social media campaign to push it over the line,” he said. “I would encourage anyone who has entered to get on that.”
There is form to follow, too. Last year the public vote crowned Hassell’s Tumbalong Green Sound Shell, the timber gridshell canopy that has become one of Darling Harbour’s favourite gathering places, proof that the People’s Choice has a knack for finding the projects people actually love being in.
The prize is worth the campaign. The People’s Choice winner takes home a beautiful timber trophy, crafted by Lasercraft from fallen trees, and a moment on stage at the gala dinner on Wednesday 21 October at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art in The Rocks.
And even if your project is not in the running, the voting page is worth the visit on its own. This year’s field is the strongest in the awards’ 27-year history, and the ballot doubles as a gallery of the best timber design in the country right now. Set aside a few minutes; it is quite a scroll.
